Spring training has always been a time for excessive facial hair, and this year is no different. So far this spring the undisputed title has to go to Jason Werth, who has been sporting this pretty sweet jesus beard and apparently has no plans on getting rid of it anytime soon. We also cannot fail to mention Washington Nationals right hander Colin Balester. The 23-year-old pitcher began growing his impressive lip warmer over the winter after betting Twins prospect Anthony Slama $500 that he could wear a mustache for longer period of time. And because Slama shaved off his ’stache before heading to Twins camp, Balester won the bet and now has facial hair worthy of an extra on Deadwood.
Yankees trade Bruney to Nationals

INDIANAPOLIS – The Yankees and Nationals agreed on a deal today that shipped Brian Bruney to Washington for a player to be named, The Post has learned.
Bruney, who drew interest from several teams – the Phillies and Braves among them – is reunited with GM Mike Rizzo, who was in Arizona’s front office when Bruney was with the Diamondbacks and has been enamored with reliever’s power arm.
The Phillies and Yankees talked about a deal but the Phillies weren’t willing to part with the prospects the Yankees requested.
The Braves had an interest in Bruney but were waiting to see if the Yankees didn’t offer the right-handed reliever a contract by Dec. 12.
Bruney, 28 in February, was 5-0 with a 3.92 ERA in 44 games during a season that started with a lot of promise as Mariano Rivera’s set up man, included two stints on the disabled list with a elbow problems, a public spitting match with Mets closer Francisco Rodriguez, being left off the postseason roster for the first two rounds and then activated for the World Series.
After making $1.25 million last year Bruney, is eligible for arbitration.
Cutting ties with Bruney is most liely a precursor to signing former Braves reliever Rafael Soriano. If the Yankees do go after Soriano it would definitely be a strong indication that they are planning on starting 2010 with both Joba and Hughes in the rotation. Soriano is a nice reliever so I am definitely all for that move, I just wish the Yankees would leave Joba in the pen where he belongs…
Jose Reyes Tears Hamstring…again

NY Post – The Mets’ willingness to let Jose Reyes keep testing his ailing right leg came back to bite them in a huge and embarrassing way yesterday.
An MRI exam revealed the shortstop tore his right hamstring muscle Tuesday while running at a workout facility in New York, endangering part or all of Reyes’ 2010 season, too.
The torn hamstring muscle is a new injury and comes on top of the torn right hamstring tendon Reyes suffered while running in Port St. Lucie in early June.
Already under fire for their bungled handling of so many of their injured players this season, the Mets now face fresh scrutiny for letting Reyes continue to run, even when it was obvious he would not be back this season.
The Mets announced Reyes’ latest medical setback moments after they ended their road schedule with a 7-4, walk-off loss to the Nationals, completing an embarrassing three-game sweep by baseball’s worst team.
It really cannot get any worse for the Mets. Just hours after K-Rod gave up his 2nd walk off grand slam of the year the Mets were given the news that their star SS needs surgery on a torn hamstring. In the past I would’ve criticized the Mets and their medical staff for their latest fuck up with the handling of Reye’s injury. It seems like what is being said is that Reyes should have had surgery on this hammy months ago and that now he will not be ready for the start of next season. This is bad for so many reasons.  What really has to suck for Mets fans is that this is now going to drag into next season. I’m sure most Mets fans would agree that 2010 cannot come fast enough, and now they are already going to have to start the year with their most explosive player on the DL. Like I said no jokes, no making fun of the Mets for me anymore. It really has gotten to the point where I actually feel bad for Mets fans which is something I never thought could be possible.
