Big Ben Accused of Sexual Assault… Again.

For the second time in less than a year, Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is being accused of sexual assault.   Yesterday afternoon, TMZ broke the story of Big Ben’s involvement in an incident which occurred at a nightclub in Milledgeville, Georgia.  The story has since been reported by the national media after being confirmed by the Georgia police.  The alleged victim, a 20-year-old female student from Georgia College & State University, was treated and released from the hospital on Friday morning.

The details of the night in question are still a bit hazy at this point, but what seems to be clear is Ben and a group of friends started the night drinking heavily at a bar called “The Brick” until about 1:30 a.m.   They then moved on to another club, Capital City, where the incident allegedly occurred.  Roethlisberger’s accuser claims she was in the ladies room when Ben entered and proceeded to assault her.

It sounds to me like Big Ben needs to put Little Ben on ice for a while…

Fantasy Football Recap: Top Performers of Week 4

49ers' Patrick Willis glides into the end zone after a 23 yard interception return for a TD in Sunday's win vs. the Rams

49ers' Patrick Willis glides into the end zone after a 23 yard interception return for a TD in Sunday's win vs. the Rams

49ers D/ST (Standard Fantasy Pts in Week 4: 43)

The 49ers defense/special teams absolutely dominated Kyle Boller and the Rams on Sunday.  The defense scored twice in the game, including a 23 yard interception return by LB Patrick Willis for a TD in the 3rd quarter and a fumble recovery in the end zone by DL Ray McDonald in the 4th quarter.  They also scored on special teams earlier in the game when the Rams botched a punt return, which the 49ers’ LB Scott McKillop fell on in the end zone for a TD.  Under the guidance of head coach Mike Singeltary, the 49ers defense has vastly improved and is quickly becoming one of the better defenses in the NFL.  If they’ve yet to be claimed in your fantasy league, I suggest you pick them up immediately, but be aware that the schedule begins to toughen with match ups vs. Atlanta, @ Houston and @ Indianapolis looming.

David Garrard- QB Jacksonville Jaguars  (Standard Fantasy Pts in Week 4:  31)

With the way the Titans’ pass defense has played this season, I expected David Garrard to perform like a #1 QB option in week 4, but in no way did I expect him to have the type of production he had.  Garrard threw for 323 yards and 3 TD’s, completing 27 or 37 passes attempted, in a crushing 37-17 defeat of the Titans.  He added 38 yards on the ground as well and lost 1 fumble.  Garrard has been somewhat inconsistent this year, but when the match up is right, it might be a good idea to get him in your lineup.

Rashard Mendenhall-  RB Pittsburgh Steelers  (Standard Fantasy Pts in Week 4:  30)

Just last week, Mendenhall was not only stuck behind Willie Parker on the Steelers’ RB depth chart, but also in head coach Mike Tomlin’s doghouse due to issues with his game preparation.  Well that all changed on Sunday vs. the Chargers.  With Parker out with an injury, Mendenhall got the start and did not disappoint.  He rushed for 165 yards on 29 carries with 2 TD’s in a 38-28 win on Sunday night.  Having lost much of his rookie season to injury in 2008, Mendenhall finally showed the Steelers what they hoped they were getting when they took him in the first round of last year’s draft.

Steve Smith-  WR New York Giants (Standard Fantasy Pts in Week 4:  25)

Smith continued his brilliant sophomore season with a career high 11 receptions for 134 yards and 2 TD’s when the Giants visited the Chiefs on Sunday.  Drafted by most in the latter rounds as a reserve WR, Smith has undoubtedly emerged as a clear must-start #1 WR option going forward.  He now leads the entire NFL in receptions with 34 and receiving yards with 411.  The only cloud hovering over an otherwise phenomenal start to his season is the status of Giants QB, Eli Manning, who left Sunday’s game with an injury to his right heel.  As long as Eli is at QB, Smith will be a viable option for the remainder of the season and beyond.

Antonio Gates-  TE San Diego Chargers  (Standard Fantasy Pts in Week 4:  24)

After 3 relatively quiet weeks to open the season, Gates broke out in a big way in Sunday’s loss to the Steelers.  He recorded 9 catches for 124 yards, including two 4th quarter TD’s as the Chargers rallied back late in the game.  Gates took advantage of the Steelers missing safety Troy Polamalu, as he was able to find plenty of space throughout Pittsburgh’s secondary.  The Chargers have a bye in week 5, but will host the Denver Broncos and their top rated defense when they return to action in week 6.

Breakout Performance of the Week:

Matt Forte-  RB Chicago Bears (Standard Fantasy Pts in Week 4:  19)

After 3 disappointing performances to open the season, Forte finally had the type of game fantasy owners envisioned when they drafted him with a top 5 pick.  He was listed as questionable before the game with a knee injury, but was able to give it a go, rushing 12 times for 121 yards and a TD in a 48-24 blowout of the Detroit Lions.  Forte had a long run of 61 yards and scored his touchdown from 37 yards out.  It remains to be seen if Forte can keep up this pace and post numbers like he did in his rookie season, but this is definitely the start of good things to come for the sophomore RB out of Tulane.

Madden Curse – You’re next Larry

The latest victim of the Madden curse

The latest victim of the Madden curse

Fuckkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk

Fuckkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk

I’m sure most of you were watching the NFL kickoff last night and saw Troy Polamalu leave the game in the second half with an injury to his left knee.  Well apparently Polamalu strained the ACL in his left knee and will miss 3-6 weeks, which is not good news for Polamalu, or the defending Superbowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers.  Now seeing as Troy Polamalu is one of two players featured on the cover of Madden X this year the question has to be asked, when will Larry Fitzgerald suffer similar misfortune?  Now I have to say I am not one to believe in curses but when it comes to the Madden curse I am a true believer.  If you don’t believe me just read the breif history on the Madden curse I outlined for you below.

Barry Sanders

Although Players were not featured on the cover until year 2, Sanders was displayed clearly in the background of the first Madden.  The electric Lions running back started the Madden jinx by announcing his retirement before the 1999 season and never returning to the NFL.

Eddie George

George is an anomaly in this gallery, because he did have a good year following his Madden cover (1,509 yards and 14 TDs), but his team did fall off a bit. After reaching the Super Bowl in 1999, the Titans fell to the Ravens in the divisional playoffs and George’s career slowly unraveled after that year. In 2001, George rushed for less the 1000 yards for the first time in his career and scored just 5 TDs.

Daunte Culpepper

After a great 2000 season, Culpepper struggled in 2001. He threw 14 touchdowns and 13 interceptions before hurting his knee in Week 13 and sitting out the rest of the season.

Marshall Faulk

Faulk and the Rams offense was dominant in 2001, but a nagging ankle injury slowed the All-Pro back and St. Louis’ offense suddenly became less dangerous. Faulk ran for just 953 yards in 14 games and the Rams went from 14-2 in ‘01 to 7-9 in ‘02.

Micheal Vick

Right after Madden ‘04 became available, Vick broke his leg in a preseason game and didn’t return until there were just five games left in the season. The injury spurred a serious debate about the necessity of the preseason and the Madden jinx was suddenly being discussed everywhere.

Ray Lewis

After a dominant campaign in 2003, Lewis had a so-so season in ‘04 and the Ravens failed to make the playoffs for the first time in four years. Lewis also got hurt and missed the final game of the year.

Donovann McNabb

McNabb led the Eagles to the Super Bowl in 2004, but 2005 was a complete disaster. He had multiple injuries, including a sports hernia that finally ended his season after nine games. And he had to deal with the incredible distraction of Terrell Owens, who turned on his quarterback and the organization.

Shaun Alexander

Alexander set the NFL record for touchdowns (28 — since broken) and led the Seahawks to the Super Bowl in 2005.  He fractured his foot in 2006 and ran for just 896 yards and seven touchdowns in 10 games.

Vince Young

In his sophomore season, Young had 9 TD passes and 17 interceptions. On the ground, Young rushed for 157 fewer yards in 2007, his Yards Per Carry fell 1.5 yards, and he scored just three rushing touchdowns after having seven his rookie year. In his first postseason game, Young threw for 138 yards with no touchdowns and one interception, while rushing for just 12 yards, in a 17-6 loss to San Diego.

Brett Favre

In his final season with Green Bay,  Favre threw 28 TD passes and 15 interceptions. Acquired by the Jets in the summer of 2008, Favre started well; in Week 4 he threw a personal best six touchdowns against the Cardinals.  By Week 12 the Jets had an 8-3 record, but missed the playoffs after losing four of their final five games, in which Favre threw nine interceptions and only two touchdown passes, bringing his season total to 22 of each. It was later revealed Favre had been playing with a torn biceps tendon late in the season.

Troy Polamalu

Polamalu finished the 2008 season with a career-high seven interceptions and led the Steelers defense to its second Super Bowl victory in four years. Late in the first half of the Steelers-Titans 2009 season opener, Polamalu, who was having an All-Pro first half, suffered a sprained MCL in his left knee after 262-pound Titan Alge Crumpler fell on his leg. Polamalu is expected to miss at least three to six weeks.

Like I said, I am not big on curses, but this can not be any more clear in my opinion.  If Larry Fitzgerald was on my fantasy team I would be shitting a brick right about now.  Do not say you have not been warned.
