NFL Playoffs: Divisional Round Preview

Eight teams remain on the Road to Super Bowl XLIV in Miami.

Arizona Cardinals @ New Orleans Saints

Saturday- January 16th 4:30 PM

The Louisiana Superdome

The Cardinals wound up on the winning side of the highest scoring playoff game in NFL history when they knocked off the Packers last Sunday by a score of 51-45.  What’s scary is that this weekend’s game vs. the Saints could wind up being just as high scoring, as both teams post two of the highest scoring offenses in the NFL.  The Saints struggled down the stretch of the regular season on both sides of the ball, but the porous defense exhibited by the Cardinals in their wild card game has got to have Drew Brees and the Saints offense salivating at their mouths.  If Pierre Thomas and the running game can get going, the Saints could run away with this one.  But you can’t count out the Cardinals, who are led by one of the most productive post season QB’s ever in Kurt Warner.  The Cardinals will also have WR Anquan Boldin back for this game, giving Warner yet another weapon at his disposal in the passing game to go along with Larry Fitzgerald and Steve Breaston.  This game will likely come down to which defense can make the bigger plays and slow down the opposing team’s offense.  It’s a tough one to call, but I’ve got a feeling the Cardinals are going to get the job done.

Prediction:  Cardinals 34 Saints  30

Baltimore Ravens @ Indianapolis Colts

Saturday- January 16th 8:15 PM

Lucas Oil Stadium

The Colts haven’t played a meaningful football game since locking up the #1 seed in the AFC by defeating Jacksonville back in week 15.  There has been a lot of controversy surrounding head coach Jim Caldwell’s decision to rest his starters down the stretch instead of going for an undefeated season, and history has shown that the Colts haven’t done well in the past under similar circumstances.  I can see Peyton Manning and the Colts offense struggling to find a rhythm early on, but the defense should be well rested and prepared for the Ravens offense.  The Ravens boast a very physical defense and will try to do everything in their power to get to Manning and force him to rush his throws.  They will also look to run the ball with Ray Rice all game long to burn the clock and keep the Colts offense off the field.  If they can do these things with success, they will have a good chance of knocking off the Colts.  But I’ve got Indianapolis winning it all, so rest or no rest, I think they play like the team we’ve seen for most of the 2009 season in this one.

Prediction:  Colts  27  Ravens 17

Dallas Cowboys @ Minnesota Vikings

Sunday- January 17th 1:00 PM

Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome

This game pits two of the most balanced teams in football against each other and has the potential to be the best game of the weekend.  Dallas is rolling, having won 4 straight games, including two straight weeks of domination against a very good Philadelphia Eagles team.  The Vikings sputtered somewhat down the stretch, but ended the season on a high note with a lopsided victory over the New York Giants.  The bye week will surely help the Vikings, especially Brett Favre and Adrian Peterson who will be well rested for this matchup.  As good as the Cowboys defense has played in recent weeks, it’s not going to be an easy task for them to slow down one of the best and most balanced offensive attacks in the league.  Dallas will also struggle to run the ball against a stout Vikings run defense, so Tony Romo will once again need to be on top of his game if the Cowboys have any chance of winning.  The Vikings secondary could struggle to cover Miles Austin and Jason Witten in the passing game, but ultimately I expect them to get the job done and move onto the NFC Championship game.

Prediction:  Vikings 28 Cowboys 24

New York Jets @ San Diego Chargers

Sunday- January 17th 4:40 PM

Qualcomm Stadium

When a team can play defense and run the ball as the Jets have done all year long, they have the ability to beat anyone they’re up against.  With that said, the Chargers have arguably been the best team in the NFL this season and it will be a tough task for the Jets to beat them in Qualcomm Stadium, where the Chargers have only lost 2 games this season.  Phillip Rivers will not shy away from throwing at Darrelle Revis.  He will take his shots downfield to Vincent Jackson throughout the game, which will open up the middle for TE Antonio Gates to find room in the Jets secondary.  I’m not sure that the Jets will have an answer for Gates, but they will need to limit his touches if they’re to have any chance of winning this game.  The Jets linebackers will also need to be on their heels and watch out for screen passes to LaDainian Tomlinson and the quicker and more dangerous, Darren Sproles.  For the Jets offense, it will be nothing new.  They’ll look to run the ball as much as possible against a defense that has struggled against the run for much of the season.  If they can have success in the running game and QB Mark Sanchez can get into the flow early and limit his turnovers, the Jets will remain in this game throughout.  For the critics out there who still believe that the Jets “backed into the playoffs,” this game will prove them wrong.  I expect a hard fought battle between a great QB on one side, and a great defense on the other.  This game will be decided in the final minutes of the 4th quarter.  If the Jets can stick to their game plan and maybe catch a few breaks, they are capable of knocking off the Chargers and advancing to the AFC Championship.  But the realist in me has got to give the edge to San Diego in this one.

Prediction:  Chargers  23  Jets 20

NFL Wild Card Weekend Preview

New York Jets vs. Cincinnati Bengals

Saturday 4:30 pm

Paul Brown Stadium

The opening game of Wild Card weekend features the first of three rematches from week 17 of the regular season.  The Jets put a whooping on the Bengals 37-0 last weekend at the Meadowlands, but will be on the road this week in a hostile environment at Paul Brown Stadium in Cincinnati (aka “The Jungle”).  Now many people can look at the Jets win last week and point to the fact that the Bengals weren’t playing at full strength and didn’t have much to play for, but it was the way the Jets beat them that has got to have Bengals players and fans alike biting their nails.  The Jets were the more physical team on both sides of the line and I expect more of that this weekend.  The return of Cedric Benson will undoubtedly help the Bengals, but Bart Scott and David Harris (game-time decision) will be ready and should be able to slow the Bengals rushing attack.   Darrelle Revis will once again matchup against Chad Ochocinco and will keep him in check all game long.  Thomas Jones and the Jets top ranked running attack should perform at a high level once again and the Bengals will need to find an answer to stopping Brad Smith and the option play.  But it is defense that will ultimately decide this game.  The team that can win the turnover battle, as well as the battle of field position, will have the upper hand and will go on to the divisional round next weekend.

Prediction:  Jets 16 Bengals 10

Philadelphia Eagles vs. Dallas Cowboys

Saturday 8:00 pm

Cowboys Stadium

Heading into the last weekend of the regular season, the Eagles were going to be my pick to represent the NFC in Super Bowl XLIV in Miami.  But after being totally dominated 24-0 by a scorching Cowboys team, I don’t even expect them to get out of the first round.  They just haven’t been the same team since losing their starting Center, Jamaal Jackson, in week 16 against the Broncos.   And while it’s well documented that the Cowboys haven’t won a playoff game since 1996, whereas the Eagles have the most successful playoff history of any NFC team in the last decade, there is just something different about this Cowboys team than those of recent past.  Tony Romo has found his go to receiver in Miles Austin and the two are clicking.  Felix Jones is finally healthy, adding another dimension to the Cowboys running game alongside Marion Barber.  And the defense has been solid for most of the year and has played extremely well down the stretch.  They will need to be ready for the pass heavy Eagles and especially big play receiver, DeSean Jackson.  The Eagles boast an excellent defense as well, but they’ll need to address a lot of the mishaps from last weekend’s game if they’re to have any chance of beating the Cowboys. Nobody should expect a blowout like the game last weekend as the Eagles will put it all on the line in this one.  Unfortunately, I see them coming up a bit short.

Prediction:  Cowboys 24 Eagles 21

Baltimore Ravens vs. New England Patriots

Sunday 1:00 pm

Gillette Stadium

The loss of Wes Welker to a knee injury in the regular season finale is going to have a definite impact on the Patriots offense in their Wild Card matchup vs. the Ravens.  Randy Moss will be double-teamed all game long, making Julian Edelman (Welker’s replacement) a key factor in this game.  If Edelman can fill in for Welker and find success with Tom Brady on short routes, the Patriots won’t miss a beat.  But if he can’t, the Patriots could find themselves in quite a battle against a solid Ravens defense headlined by no other than Ray Lewis.  The Patriots won their regular season matchup with the Ravens 27-21 back in week 4 of the regular season.  In that game, Ravens QB Joe Flacco played very well, showing poise beyond his years and nearly leading the Ravens to a last second victory if it weren’t for a dropped pass in the end zone.  RB Ray Rice is the key player on offense for the Ravens and he will be heavily involved in both the running game and passing game for the Ravens.  Willis McGahee had a superb performance in the regular season finale, so the Patriots defense will need to be prepared to stop both backs in this game.  The game plan for the Ravens will undoubtedly be to control the clock with their running game and keep Tom Brady and the potent Patriots offense off the field.  If this game were being played in Baltimore, I may have called for the upset, but I expect the Patriots to win this game and move on to play the Chargers in the divisional round.

Prediction:  Patriots  27  Ravens  21

Green Bay Packers vs. Arizona Cardinals

Sunday 4:30 pm

University of Phoenix Stadium

These two teams will meet in Arizona for the 2nd straight weekend.  The Cardinals had learned by kickoff of last weekend’s game that they could no longer earn a first-round bye, leading head coach Ken Whisenhunt to use a trimmed down game plan in a 33-7 loss to the Packers.  Despite all of that, the Packers showed why they’re entering the playoffs as the hottest team in the NFC, having won 7 or their last 8 games.  Aaron Rodgers leads a potent Packers passing attack and Ryan Grant headlines the running game.  Their defense is one of the best in the league and will need to be prepared as they face off against a high-octane Cardinals offense led by veteran QB Kurt Warner.  The Cardinals could be without WR Anquan Boldin in this one, putting all the pressure on superstar wideout Larry Fitzgerald.  Fitzgerald will always find ways to be involved and if he plays even close to the level he was playing in the 2009 playoffs, watch out.  But the fact  that he’ll be covered by one of the best covermen in the league in Charles Woodson should limit the amount of damage he can do.  The Cardinals running game and defense is much better than it was in last year’s playoffs and they made it to the Super Bowl, so they’re more than capable of winning this game.  But if the Packers can play solid defense, avoid penalties and protect Aaron Rodgers, I expect them to come out on top in this one.

Prediction:  Packers 31  Cardinals 27

Brady Quinn has nothing to live for

Brady Quinn realizing he sucks at football

Brady Quinn realizing he sucks at football

Life hasn’t been going too great for Brady Quinn.   After being named the starting quarterback for the Cleveland Browns prior to the first game of the season by head coach Eric “Respect My Authori-tah!” Mangini, Quinn was benched at halftime during last week’s 34-3 loss to the Baltimore Ravens and was replaced by Derek Anderson.  Brady was 6-8 for 34 yards with an interception when he was pulled.  Oh yeah, then Anderson came in and shit the bed even worse, going 11-19 for 92 yards with three interceptions.

To add insult to injury, Mangenious decided to go with Anderson as the starter yesterday against the Bengals.  Of course the Browns lost in overtime.

But even after the benching, Quinn’s week got so much worse.  Rapper Common was in Cleveland Thursday night to perform a concert.

Here’s what happened:

During a performance at Cleveland’s House of Blues Thursday night, Common dissed Quinn during a freestyle. He rapped that he “won’t mess up like Brady Quinn,” and then mentioned Derek Anderson in the next verse. After the audience reacted to the diss, it was noticed that Quinn was actually in the house along with several teammates. Ouch.

That was probably the most embarrassed Quinn has felt since he had to tell his parents he wasn’t gay.
